Executives talk about generations working side by side, its challenges and lessons in the job market.

At least five different generations currently share the same corporate environment. The observation comes from Renata Filippi Lindquist, partner at Soul HR Consulting, who pointed to this scenario as one of the greatest transformations in the contemporary world of work during Soul's exclusive live session, held on October 16, whose theme was precisely how different generational profiles work side by side in the job market. Among the challenges of this coexistence, Lilian Sousa, Human and Organizational Development (DHO) director at Grupo Edson Queiroz, highlights the impact of technology, especially after the 2000s, which affected Generation X and Millennials in different ways. “I am from the generation that saw the personal computer being born and, today, I work alongside young people who are practically digital natives”, she points out.

Another important point, according to her, is the change in the value attributed to purpose. “Younger generations have a different view of the social value of work”, Lilian explains.

For Maria A. de Nonohay Schneider, VP of People and Sustainability at Plurix (Pátria Investimentos), generational and cultural clashes are common, especially in the context of mergers and acquisitions. “Empathy and dialogue are fundamental to overcoming these differences”, says the executive, noting that professionals can also feel the impact of regional cultures, far from large urban centers such as São Paulo, for example.

Still on the challenges, Lucilene Rezende Scurato, HR director at DHL, adds that turnover can seem strange to more senior executives, who are used to spending at least 10 years at a company.

“Older generations are still surprised by the professional mobility of the new generations, who seek learning and purpose in different experiences”, she adds.

As an opportunity, Lucilene stresses that the focus should not be on age alone, but on each professional's mindset and experiences. “We are all novices at some things and veterans at others”, she reflects.

Lilian adds that “developing inclusive leadership is essential to promote coexistence and teamwork within diversity”. She also sees positive aspects in this new context: “the new generations are more at ease communicating, expressing themselves and speaking in public, something less common in other times.”

For her, empathy and delivering value are points of convergence among all generations. “Delivering value is a common goal. Everyone wants to add value to the company and to the work, regardless of generation or age”.
