Is Emotional Health Taking a Back Seat?

We are in Yellow September, a period usually associated with suicide prevention, but what if, instead, we looked at the importance of caring for our emotions and our psychological and emotional health on an ongoing basis? Although often intangible, mental health is one of the most neglected pillars in the workplace and in personal life. This article seeks to bring a new perspective on the importance of caring for this dimension, which is essential for balance and success, both individual and organizational.

Our Emotions Shape Who We Are and How We Act

One of the most critical factors in psychological imbalance is the lack of attention to the importance of our emotions. Emotions, although invisible, play a vital role in our mental health. If we are talking about emotions, it is essential to mention neuroscience, because the way we think directly shapes how we feel and, consequently, how we act. The more we understand the connection between mind and emotions, the more healthy professionals and organizations we will have.

The Impact on the Workplace: Health as an Organizational Value

Mental health is not just a personal matter. It also adds value in the workplace. Emotionally balanced professionals are more committed, productive and engaged. Organizations that invest in the mental well-being of their employees therefore reap benefits both in results and in organizational climate.

But what we often see are professionals unable to deal with their emotions, frequently because they are stuck in a rigid mindset that prevents them from seeing beyond their limitations. This kind of behavior not only affects the individual but also compromises the organization's success.

Competition: An Escape from Our Pain?

In a highly competitive corporate world, we are often pushed to ignore our emotional pain. The constant pursuit of results and targets and the adrenaline of being at the top can be a way of masking what really affects us. But at the end of the day, when we come face to face with who we truly are, without the trappings of the professional environment, we realize that the pain has not been dealt with. And this lack of emotional preparedness, over time, can lead to serious consequences.

Competing can be healthy, but it takes emotional maturity to deal with scenarios that fall outside our expectations. Without that preparation, emotional emptiness can set in, feeding a cycle of dissatisfaction and lack of purpose that often leads to mental exhaustion.

Vision: Preparing for Life and for the Future

Organizations and professionals need to be better prepared to deal with emotions. The ability to manage our own emotions and thoughts is what prepares us for life's inevitable changes and uncertainties. Mental health should not be a concern only in times of crisis, but an ongoing practice of care.

May this Yellow September serve as an invitation to reflect not only on the prevention of extreme acts, but on how we can take better care of our emotional and psychological health throughout the year. After all, living an emotionally balanced life not only makes us better professionals but also brings us closer to a fuller and more meaningful life.

The Importance of Taking Care of Yourself

Mental and emotional health is a gift we must look after every day. When we neglect that care, we run the risk of losing the meaning of our journey, whether at work or in personal life. Caring for our emotions, being open to revisiting our thoughts and preparing ourselves to deal with the transience of life are the greatest steps we can take toward a more balanced and healthier existence.
